#sleep Pay attention shift workers. I’m hoping to catch you before you fall asleep. Does you PCP know you’re a shift worker? Do you share with your MD when you have trouble sleeping? How about when you have mood changes that scare you? How many times have you almost fell asleep driving home? Night RN’s know these issues all to well – but so do Amazon warehouse workers, cleaners, truckers, lab workers and so many more. There is a whole subculture of those working nights and attempting to sleep during the day. As a 24/7 culture we need these workers but we ignore the fact that they have increased health, mood and safety issues if they are not allowed adequate time to adjust sleep habits and/or provided professional guidance on how to manage prolonged sleep loss or disturbance. This is from a military study: “Results show that sleep quality, quantity, and sleeping conditions remain problems for these military shift workers. Preliminary findings suggest that the 8-hour shift schedule is preferable to the 12-hour one, both in terms of personal preference and performance.”
