#sleep Lets talk structure of the brain and how different parts affect or are affected by sleep. The hypothalamus is first. The hypothalamus, a peanut-sized structure that housing cells that act as a control center affecting sleep & arousal. There are cells that senses light directly from the eyes and help control behavioral rhythms. Some people with damage to this part of their hypothalamus sleep erratically. They can’t marry their circadian rhythms with the daily light-dark cycle. Interestingly, most blind people maintain the ability to sense light and are able to create a sleep/wake cycle that is in line with the light-dark cycle.
