#nutrition So what’s your morning pick me up? Even more concerning what’s your teenagers pick me up? Sugar amounts to added calories and carbohydrates and has significant side effects. “Appetite for sugar is propelled by changes in the morphology and activity of the reward system reminiscent of addiction. Sugar intake also shifts the hunger-satiety continuum, facilitating initiation of consumption in the absence of energy needs and maintenance of feeding despite ingestion of large food loads that endanger homeostasis.” What does that mean? Our brain changes with high sugar and creates a feedback loop that craves more sugar. It interferes with the natural feedback loops that control hunger and feeling full making us more likely to seek food when we aren’t even hungry. This is not the way to start each day – especially for children and teens. It’s actually creating an addictive habit.
